Not all forms of capitalism are evil exploiters of the general population - This one has been thriving since 1956 and demonstrates the social teaching of the Roman Catholic Church actually works when put into practice.

Due to cyber threats from hackers and criminal use of AI, all my voice recordings have been deleted. Phone calls are also a threat: wait for callers to identify themselves... do not let criminals record your voice by speaking first. Contact me.

Not all forms of capitalism are evil exploiters of the general population

I wonder whether families owning their own company have ever thought of granting shares in their company to their workers; so that in the end the workers would become the owners? That would be a sure way to guarantee the longevity of their company and the good work that they do and the benefits that extend widely out to all who are touched in any way by them and their products.

Check out this link to Mondragon Corporationa just and equitable form of capitalism that originated in the Basque country of Spain in the 1950's when all the people were unemployed and their priest suggested they create work for themselves; rather than wait for a rich capitalist to come create jobs for them. Since they built their first little company to make washing machines for their wives, Mondragon has grown into a multinational cooperative corporation.

To this day, the workers are the owners, and the upper management posts render accounts to the general assembly of workers regulary; where decisions are made. No one ever loses their job unless they don't want to work. 40% of profits go into the pension fund, another 40% is invested in the company to grow it and set up new companies, 10% goes into R & D, and 10% goes into education for all their children. They have their own university.

Everywhere they are, the society prospers because they take full responsibility for their place in society, and they pay their taxes; contrary to Western capitalists who for the most part avoid their responsibilities by moving their wealth to tax havens in the Caribbean.  Mondragon is truly amazing.

Why is our environment going to hell? Why are our societies apparently paralyzed and doing little or nothing to stop runaway climate change? Why are our form of capitalism, technology, Webworld, politics, media, education, and all the other forces shaping our lives driving full speed ahead as if Planet Earth's resources were inexhaustible - which they are not - polluting the air, soil, and waters as if only quarterly profits matter?

It appears to be simply because those with wealth and power, for the most part, think only of themselves and the short term. They care nothing for our common home - often treating it like a toilet or garbage dump - and they care nothing for the other 95% of humanity, nor even for their own children and grandchildren, if they have any.

In the meantime, the rest of us can do all that is within our power to do. We can simplify our lifestyle, we can support all just and equitable ventures that seek to work for the common good, we can do all we can to care for our common home, and we can give thanks to our Creator for the beauty and abundance of life and the wondrous order and complexity of the universe.

See the 2015 film "Tomorrow" (also in French) or read the French book "Demain" by French journalists who went all over the world interviewing people making a difference and improving our common home. Seeing what other people are able to do is inspiring us to also come up with creative solutions to the many challenges before us all.

There are many other creative initiatives that have been taken and continue to be taken to care for our common home, Pope Francis' term for Planet Earth, as elaborated by him in his encyclical Laudato Si published in 2015 and addressed to all of humanity. A documentary was published in 2012 explaining the intricate and wonderfully designed ecosystem of earth entitled "Symphony of the Soil". A series of documentaries have been published in book and video form exploring the complex relationship between us, our food, the Earth, society, government, and commercial interests generally titled Food, Inc. (2008); then in 2023: Food, Inc. 2; in video format, and in book format too

Please feel free to share widely this reflection.

Peace to you, all your colleagues, fellow students, fellow workers, friends, and families.

Healthy, just, and equitable whole nut butters and a form of capitalism that is socially responsible - not avoiding taxes - and beneficial to the common good

Nut butters - natural, wholesome, just & equitable

I have been buying smooth "Nuts to You" Almond Butter since I first discovered it, having been diagnosed with functional hypoglycemia in late 1981 and began shopping for what would help me manage my condition in 1982. At that time, so few people bought pure nut butters that the jars had been sitting long on the shelf and there was an inch of oil on top. It was very difficult to mix it up. Now, even large chain grocery stores sell good nut butters and I can always find it, no matter where I go.

I don't recall the name of the owner when they were in Paris ON, but he was very affable and receptive, and we had a great chat some 15 years ago. He informed me that they take care to purchase nuts that are just and equitable, that are not the fruit of exploitation, and that the purchase price goes to the growers. I hope that is still the case, despite the many challenges in our world dominated by rabid American style capitalism that cares only for the profits accruing to the handful of owners, who avoid taking their social responsibilities, and care nothing at all about the general population, or the environment, our common home, nor the common good.

Not all forms of capitalism are evil exploiters of the general population

I wonder whether families owning their own company have ever thought of granting shares in their company to their workers; so that in the end the workers would become the owners? KLEIN: Enough with the attack ads already, we deserve better

https://www.kenoraminerandnews.com/opinion/klein-enough-with-the-attack-ads-already-we-deserve-better

My response - by Gilles Surprenant, Montreal QC Canada

I propose Jesus Christ as model for public speaking and public office. He always spoke openly to the heart of issues troubling people in his day and only resorted to attacking his enemies when these obstinate leaders and holders of high office showed they had no intention of lifting a finger to lighten the burdens carried by ordinary people, but cared only about their status and power over them.

+ + + + + + +

It's not difficult to agree with Kevin Klein on this one. For decades I've felt varying degrees of disgust and even anger when witnessing the attack ads of American politicians, our neighbours to the south. Video ads are even worse than audio or in print, because they put across such a barrage of emotional aggression as to greatly hinder the thought process. Klein makes the point that this is precisely what attack ads are designed to do. Politicians often don't know what to do about current problems and challenges; so, rather than say "We don't know what to do." they resort to attacking their opponents.

Klein eloquently makes his point and ends with a plea to all of us to do something about it and stop allowing ourselves to be manipulated in these eggregious ways. We let our politicians know not only that their attack strategy won't work, but also that in using them, they betray themselves by revealing their helplessness in the face of current problems.

Let politicians everywhere know that WE ARE WATCHING AND LISTENING. Their continued use of attack ads will work against them and produce the opposite effect than that which they hope to obtain. They will disclose the truth about themselves; namely, that they don't know what to do in the face of our current problems. Since that is the case, what are their true motives in running for office? Eh? Didn't you think we would notice? Eh?

Kevin Klein's opinion piece March 29th, 2025 was also carried by:

MSN & Winnipeg Sun - March 30th, 2025

Montreal Gazette - 7:00 p.m., April 1st, 2025

Known Facts – Trying to establish a Timeline

From 1817 to the present....

Click here for a fuller and more detailed history

From 1953 to 2024, the following 12 parishes and missions have been suppressed and their registers have been transferred to a neighboring parish church office.

St. Agnes – 1904 to 1953                        St. Ann – 1867 to 1982

Our Lady of Good Counsel (St. Mary's) – 1879 to 1984

St. Thomas Aquinas – 1908 to 1990

St. Philip Neri Mission – 1965 to 2002            St. Rita – 1952 to 2002

All Saints Mission – 1963 to 2003

Marie-Reine-de-la-Paix – 1954 to 2009 when it became Jésus Lumière du Monde / Jesus Light of the World

St. David – 1963 to 2010 when it was joined to Jésus Lumière du Monde / Jesus Light of the World

St. Dominic – 1912 to 2012

St. Raphael the Archangel – 1930 to 2019? When it was changed into a Palliative Care project

St. Anthony of Padua – 1884 which will close this June, 2024

Our Archdiocese expanded as it established dozens of new parishes, on the fringes of center town and in the developing suburbs on the Island of Montreal, the Island of Laval, and the Assomption peninsula. This came to require additional personnel for the diocesan Curia, the operating center of our diocese supporting our Archbishop. The Diocese acquired an office building formerly owned by the Shell company and it came to be known as the “2000”, which is its address on Sherbrooke Street West, opposite the old Grand Seminary.

In addition, growth in personnel was also caused by all that developed during and after Vatican Council II in Rome from 1962 to 1965. However, as the Curia personnel was expanding, despite the added number of parishes and churches, the actual Sunday practice for worship began to diminish. The shocking experiences of WW II, the ensuing prosperity of the 1950’s, the social upheaval of the 1960’s, the confusion, violence, and questioning of the 1970’s, the disillusionments of the 1980’s, the sexual and authority abuse beginning in the 1990’s and running into the 2000’s, and finally the Covid-19 pandemic… people were taking a step back from their Sunday worship, support, faith practice, and perhaps even from their belief in God.

The plummeting Sunday attendance resulted in the inevitable plummeting of donations and receipts for all the parishes, which translated into diminishing receipts for the Diocese; since its primary source of revenue has been the contribution made by the parishes, usually on a monthly basis. This “diocesan tax” originally set at 3% in the early 19th century, was increased to 5% as attendance began to drop and the Diocese’s costs were simultaneously increasing. Since my ordination in 1983, the rate went from 3% to 5%, then to 7%, and finally some 30 years ago, to 9%. Unfortunately, 9% of zero equals zero. The well is all but dry.

The Diocese has not been able to adapt and downsize fast enough, and has been running deficits for many years. By the grace of God and the generosity of the faithful, bequests let the Diocese balance its deficits by year’s end. At the end of 2023, though, a few dozen workers were let go, and there may have to be more.

Churches built to set 1,000 barely see a few hundred or less on any given Sunday. Many parishes, especially older ones, have not had the funds to do maintenance, let alone major repairs; with the result that churches and rectories have become unsafe and have been closed by the city. Many parishes cannot even remunerate their priest and are unable to have any staff; they rely on volunteers to keep the office open for service a few hours a week.

The Diocese no longer has any funds to support bankrupt parishes. “What will be the future of the Catholic Christian faith in our neighbourhood?” Our ancestors rolled up their sleeves and worked together to build our churches and spread the faith. “What are we doing to proclaim the Good News by our lives?” Society is in a housing crisis. Not only itinerants, but even ordinary families are being pushed out of their homes by owners who want to renovate. “How can we work with government to build housing on our unused church properties?”

The time is now for us to no longer be content to live as a “religious consumer” expecting services from our Church and, instead, heed Jesus’ call to become missionary disciples, to “go out and make disciples.”
